Citizenship Classes

Citizenship classes prepare newcomers for the Canadian citizenship exam. Using the Canadian citizenship book “Discover Canada”, we have created an interactive curriculum and delivered a series of popular and well-attended Citizenship classes to ensure our clients are well prepared for the citizenship test and to strengthen the clients’ ability for civic participation. This program is facilitated by an English as a Second Language instructor as well as volunteer facilitators, and includes pre- and post-course mock tests.

In 2012-2013, over 400 clients participated in citizenship classes.
In 2013- 2014: 260 clients participated in these sessions.

We partner with volunteers and community-based organizations to create community-led citizenship ceremonies. We also organize roundtable discussions with a mix of new citizens and established citizens to share their experiences and reflect on what it means to be a Canadian citizen. In
addition, an Aboriginal dance group of Thorncliffe Park residents and an RCMP Mountie participate in the ceremony. We hosted a citizenship ceremony on October 19, 2012 at the Science Centre and a second one on March 22, 2013 at Thorncliffe Park Elementary School in which the Swedish Minister for Integration, who was visiting us for the day, was able to both observe and participate.
