Child & Family Services

Homework Club

This is a registered program that is free for children 7-12 years old, living in the Thorncliffe Neighbourhood. It is provided Tuesdays and Thursdays. It runs only during school year (September to June). Our program progresses with the joint partnership of the local public school, parents and teachers and volunteers. High school students from Marc Garneau Collegiate, college and university students tutor one-on-one to support the children in math, English and French. Guests, including community members, are invited to bring music, science activities and fun in an educational way to our program. Support for the family is also offered through regular workshops provided for the parents of the Homework Club children. The Homework Club focuses strongly on helping children with their homework by providing reading materials in different languages, opportunity to play, relax and interact with peers.

“I am the mother of one of the families attending the Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office after-school program. I have two daughters currently enrolled in the program since September 2010, and would like to send my third child in the program next year too. This program has benefited my family and the community of Thorncliffe Park tremendously. Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office is a great help to all newcomers everywhere. My children have improved in all subjects and are continuing to excel. The program facilitators have been very helpful and provide assistance to me in my first language which is not English. The after-school program is a flexible program that allows the children to socialize, complete their homework, play games, puzzles, read books in various languages and much more. The facilitators are always planning fun new initiatives, such as taking them for educational trips and having fun workshops.

“The children of Homework club had the privilege of attending a pottery workshop by Penelope and Linda from “Potter’s Studio”, located in our own neighbourhood. They got to experience the beauty of the art of pottery as they sculpted their own animals and pencil holders, which they had loads of fun making! The kids showed off their creations with great joy and pride! The experience was in all a very unique and creatively stimulating one for the kids! The staff of Homework Club are very thankful to Penelope and Linda from “Potter’s Studio” for their time and enthusiasm!”
